We love cars and we love driving in Townsville! Check out our tips for the road and things to check out in the area:
If you’re new to driving in Queensland, or you just haven’t brushed up on your road rules for a while, then it’s probably a good idea to have a refresher on a few of the common driving mistakes made on the Townsville roads. If you want a comprehensive list of the traffic legislation, head over to the Department of Transport site.
If you’re planning on using a mobile phone while you’re on the road, there are a few very important don’t-do’s to keep in mind, including basically anything that involves actually touching your phone with your hand (turning it on or off, holding it to your head, operating applications etc.). This means you’ll need to buy a commercially manufactured hands-free kit or pull over to a complete parked position before taking a car. If you’re on your Ps or you’re under 25, you aren’t permitted to use your mobile phone at all while driving. A mobile phone infraction can cost you $391, and 3 demerit points, plus double penalties if you get caught twice in the same year.
Sometimes, while driving, you’ll see special purpose lanes marked for use by buses, bicycles, taxis etc. This doesn’t always means that you are never allowed to use the lane, but it’s important to know the circumstances. Bus lanes can be used by bicycles, taxis, and emergency vehicles, but not normal cars. Transit lanes must only be used if you have 2 or 3 passengers, depending on whether it is marked T2 or T3 respectively. Exceptions to these rules, which allow you to use special purpose lanes, are when you must avoid an obstruction or accident, when you are obeying traffic signs, or when you must use the lane to turn or merge appropriately.
One of the lesser known traffic rules is about driving with animals! If you’re animal is in the car with you, it is not permitted to ride in your lap. It is recommended to have it restrained or in a carrier, although the rules do not technically state that this is the law. If your animal is in the back of a ute, it must be safely restrained. There is actually a whole page on the Queensland Government website about transporting dogs in utes, for the safety of the dog as well as other vehicle operators, and yourself. Check it out here.
If you want to put your road knowledge to the test, take the road rules refresher quiz!
