We love cars and we love driving in Tasmania! Check out our tips for the road and things to check out in the area:

Every state in Australia has it’s own nuances when it comes to rules of the road. The Road Safety Advisory Council has issued a report on the ten most misunderstood road rules in Tasmania as it seems that there are some common misunderstandings amongst Tassie drivers. If you’re selling a car in Tassie and buying a new one, or planning to drive at all in the state, these are good ones to brush up on:

-Make sure you give way to vehicles already in a roundabout and use your indication if you’re making a turn. Make sure to be in the left or right lane if you are turning, and the right lane only for making a U-turn. Perhaps the most overlooked rule is that you must indicate left when you are about to exit the roundabout, even if you were making a right turn originally.

-If you’re turning at an intersection, make sure you go slow enough and look out for pedestrians crossing the road you’re about to enter. This is obviously important for everyone’s safety, but it’s also the law to give way.

-Mobile phones are becoming like appendages to our body, but its important to know the laws about driving while using them. You can still use your mobile phone but it must be on a fixed mounting device, or accessed through hands-free technology such as blue tooth.

-You might think that using headlights will always increase safety and visibility, but they can obstruct the vision of other drivers if not used properly. Don’t use high beams if you are within 200m of a vehicle, either in front of you or oncoming. Fog lights also shouldn’t be used unless the conditions are actually foggy or misty.

Tasmania also has lots of little critters and wild life roaming around it’s roads, even relatively close to the city. If you’re driving anywhere close to dawn or dusk, don’t drive to quickly and make sure you’re ready to break for kangaroos and other animals that have wandered across the road. There are so many beautiful destinations you can reach by car around the state that you are likely to end up driving during one of these riskier times. Just make sure to stay alert and protect yourself, other drivers, and all the cute critters out there.

If you’re feeling a bit rusty on your road rules knowledge, you can always head over to the department of transport website and brush up on the legislation. There are driver knowledge practice tests online designed to help anyone who is preparing for their test, but they are useful for anyone who feels like they need a refresher.
