We love driving as much as we love cars! Here are some handy tips for driving the roads of Ballarat:

In general, the speed limit in residential areas is 50km/h while highways are generally 100 or sometimes 110km/h. That said, be aware of any signage indicating otherwise as you may unknowingly enter a school area or a slower part of the highway. When passing emergency vehicles or stationary police vehicles, it’s the law to slow down to 40km/h.

Entering a freeway is similar to entering a roundabout in that you have to give way to cars already on the freeway. If there are traffic signals controlling the entry, make sure you move as soon as it’s green because the lights do change quickly. Once on the freeway, make sure you stay out of the right lane unless you are actively overtaking. If you need to stop for any reason then do so in the emergency stopping lane, but ideally don’t stop at all while driving on a freeway.

When it comes to mobile phone use while driving, the best practice is not to use them at all so your focus can be on the road. If you’re a learner or P plate driver then that’s actually the law. For fully licensed driver’s you may receive calls and use audio functions as long as the device is attached to a commercially designed holder, or it can be controlled through voice activation. Either way, the phone cannot be touching the driver’s body. Nowadays many people use smartwatches for their mobile phone functions, but this should be avoided as well to avoid accidents or fines.

You must indicate anytime you are making a turn or changing lanes, and the indictor should be switched on with plenty of time for other drivers to anticipate your moves. If you’re making a U-turn, indicate and make sure there are no single or double lines down the middle of the road, and no signs stating “no U-turn”.

As is the case in all parts of Australia, anyone driving in Ballarat must have an up to date driver’s license on their person at any time they are operating a vehicle. Overseas licenses may be valid, but double check to be sure about current regulations.
