The WA Hot Rod & Street Machine Spectacular
Graylands Road, Claremont, Western Australia
As the makers of event stipulate, this is much more than a show and is called a spectacular for good reason. What now holds all the glamour and pizzaz of a classic indoor car show began in 1995 when a group of hot rod enthusiasts gathered on a Perth verandah and decided to bring their dreams to fruition. On a weekend in June each year, for more than two decades, the group has welcomed hundreds of not only hot rods, but muscle cars, dragsters, classic and luxury vehicles, and even motorcycles, to gather at the Claremont showgrounds. Over the years, the event has steadily raised the bar on the standard of quality and design of vehicles on show and it has slowly earned an international reputation amongst prestigious hot rod shows around the globe. Each year has a unique theme and all are welcome to get up close and personal with each vehicle whether car owners or simply enthusiasts. West Coast Low Down Kustom Kulture Festival
Pavilions 2&3 Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre
21 Mounts Bay Road, Perth, Western Australia
The Kustom Kulture festival is definitely an event in its own unique category, standing way out amongst traditional car shows around the country. Far beyond simply showing off rare and exoctic vehicles, this festival brings car owners together with car builders themselves, as well as bike builders, car enthusiasts and even tattoo artists. The festival revolves around custom cars built between the 1930’s and 60’s but also focuses on the culture surrounding these vehicles, which includes fashion, design, art, music, and lifestyle in general. The promoters describe it as an event that “honours the traditions of the hotrod, kustom, lowrider and tattoo scenes of Southern California in the 60’s and before – while firmly looking to the future to inspire individual creativity and self expression”. From live music to a tattoo alley, featured builders to fashion competitions, It’s hard to grasp the concept without experiencing it first hand. Any car owners or enthusiasts in Perth should put it on the do-not-miss list. Check out the details at their site.
The Shannons Day of the Volkswagen
Wilsons Park, South Fremantle, Western Australia
Every state in Australia has its own special Day of the Volkswagen each year, but the Shannons Day of the Volkswagen in South Fremantle is by far the biggest and best of the lot. The show has taken place at various locations in the area, often at Wilson’s park, and usually lands on a Sunday in early December. As you probably have guessed by now, this car show is truly a showcase of all things V-Dub. That said, all cars that fit into the VW family are welcomed into the show including Audi, Skoda, Ghia and many more. Whether your a Volkswagen club member, a non-member VW owner, or simple a VW lover, you’re invited to come along and participate. Aside from the cars themselves, there will also be food and drinks available as well as kids activities, so you can bring the whole family. By the end of the day, there will be trophies and prizes awarded to a small number of proud VW owners. What’s special about this competition is that it’s not purely about glitz and glam, but really about the wild and wonderful range of all types of VWs from hippy vans to zippy sports cars. The event costs $10 to enter a vehicle and is free for the public to enjoy. Find out more here.
