Supercars, The Gold Coast 600
Surfer’s Paradise Street Circuit, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast
So much more than a car show, Supercar’s Gold Coast 600 is a vehicle extravaganza held in October each year in the ocean breeze of Surfers paradise. Formerly known as the Vodafone Gold Coast 600, and the V8 Supercars championship prior to that, the event continues to be a regular motor car racing event in the line-up of the ever-popular Supercars’ annual schedule. Over a three-day weekend, a series of shorter races takes place to line up the top ten qualifiers by the Sunday. The event then culminates with a riveting 300km sprint at the end of the weekend.
The event originally ran for eight years as exhibition races under the names of the V8 supercar challenge and the Gold Coast Indy 300, before it earned championship status in 2002. The weekend changed shape several times over the years with the pull-out of the IndyCar series in 2009 and the cancellation of the A1 Grand Prix which put V8 Supercars at the top for the first time ever. The name Gold Coast 600 took its place for the first time in 2010 when the track was shortened to just under 3 km (from 4.47km) and a new requirement for internationally reputed co-drivers was instated. The event continues to this day, attracting world-renowned drivers and fans from all over the country, and even the world.
Sanctuary Cove Car Festival
The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove, Gold Coast
For the past eight years, Gold Coast car enthusiasts have cruised up to Sanctuary Cove each September to partake in the one-day car festival. The festival is held on a Sunday, costs only $10 (children are free), and is aimed at all car lover’s, with or without a vehicle of their own. If you do own a luxury, classic or vintage vehicle, you can register through their website and have your car featured in the festival! They boast having both the hottest and rarest vehicles in Queensland.
If you’ve never been, you can pick up a festival map when you arrive so you don’t miss out on any of the fabulous cars on display. They have a few different categories for viewing pleasure. Perhaps the crowd-favourite is the Classics, Exotics & Race cars. Here is where keen Classics owners give their rare vehicles a good polish and bring them out of hiding for one special day. You can expect to see gems such as the 1958 Chevy Impala, the ‘57 Thunderbird, or even the 1967 Morris Mini Cooper. Various car clubs around the state also tend to participate and bring out their shining stars. In 2012, the Porsche club of Queensland put 80 of their best vehicles on display. For anyone who has never experienced a luxury vehicle like a Ferrari, Rolls Royce, or Aston Martin, the Sanctuary Cove Festival is your chance! If you’re lucky, you may even get a chance to see one of the racing vehicles that won a historical event, such as the BMW M4 GT driven by Tony Longhurst in Bathurst in 2018. Car enthusiasts, this is not one to miss.
